Knit a miniature shawl to learn the special techniques of shaping, lace knitting, finishing and blocking.

Student Supplies: 2-3 oz. fingering or sport weight wool. Straight or circular needles size 6 to 8 or size needle to get a gauge of 3 1/2 to 4 stitches per inch in garter stitch with your chosen yarn. Also, yarn needle, scrap yarn, basic knitting supplies, scissors, pencil and paper.

Classroom Supplies: Tables and Chairs, Flip chart/ marker board.

Knitted Ruana Workshop
3 hours
25 Students Maximum
Format; Lecture/Demo/ Hands-on Combo

Knitted ruanas are glorious garments! They drape and wrap you in wonderful fibers. In this hands-on workshop, learn the shaping and construction techniques for two different ruanas as well as how to choose your fibers and techniques for embellishment including fringing and beads.

Student Supplies: Bring as many different yarns as you like. Hit your yarn stash. Worsted weight is great and is the basis of these garments but don't leave out the mohair and sport weight and novelty yarns. We'll be experimenting with color and texture. Mohair is great in a Ruana as it keeps the garment light in weight and for the beading technique you must bring a mohair or other thin, lightweight yarn. A rule of thumb is if you like the way the balls of yarn look together, bring it along. Be prepared to share small amounts of yarn with each other. Also bring Circular or straight needles size 6-8 (for worsted weight yarn), General knitting supplies (yarn needle, scrap yarn, basic knitting supplies, scissors, pencil and paper), and a small amount of water-soluble white glue (like Elmer's).

Classroom Supplies: Tables and Chairs, Flip chart/ marker board.
